Flooring Service

Flooring is one of the most important elements of home design. It adds to your comfort, reflects your personality, and is among the first things a visitor notices when entering your abode. It may last for decades or even the entire life of the house, and it requires a major investment. For all these reasons, you need to know enough about the available flooring materials to make an informed decision.

There’s a lot to learn, and we’re here to provide all the guidance you need. For starters, here’s an overview of the types of flooring we install.

Hardwood: The most popular flooring in the Boston area, hardwood is prized for its beauty, longevity, and ability to visually warm up a room. What’s more, having hardwood flooring can make homeowners happier, according to a joint study by the National Association of Realtors® and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

You can choose hardwood to go with any décor, from light oak or pine that highlights contemporary Scandinavian furnishings to warm cherry or deep walnut that complements a more traditional American setting. Available either unfinished or prefinished, hardwood is relatively easy to install and maintain. If you choose to start with unfinished wood, we’ll stain and finish it once we’ve installed it in your home.

You can expect hardwood to incur some wear and tear from everyday traffic, minor household mishaps, and exposure to sunlight, but we can refinish or repair your flooring as needed to keep it looking great.

A big advantage of hardwood flooring is that it can improve your indoor air quality. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) favors hardwood floors because they don’t provide any place for microorganisms and other allergens to accumulate.

If you expect to sell your house someday, it’s also nice to know that hardwood, which is regarded as premium flooring, can boost its resale value. This makes it well worth the initial expense, which is greater than that of most other flooring materials.

You might want to choose another material for your kitchen and bathrooms, though, because hardwood does not absorb moisture, and dampness can damage it over time.

Laminate: This chameleon of flooring materials can imitate the look and texture of hardwood planks as well as stone, ceramic, or porcelain tiles. You can choose smooth laminate that looks like polished wood, marble, or ceramic. If you’d like your flooring to have a wood-grain texture, you can opt for embossed laminate. If your home has a vintage vibe, you can pick hand-scraped laminate with patterns that resemble antiqued wood. Give your floor a matte look with low-gloss laminate, or let it shine with high-gloss material.

As practical as it is pretty, laminate can give you the look of luxurious flooring without the high price tag. It’s available in water-resistant and waterproof varieties that are ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. It’s durable enough to stand up to the traffic in busy households with kids, pets, and ladies wearing high heels. Although it resists scratches and impacts, laminate will eventually show some wear. A matte finish is the best for hiding scratches.

Vinyl:This versatile, multilayered flooring, composed of materials such as plastic, fiberglass and PVC, is available in planks, tiles, or sheets that can mimic hardwood, ceramic, marble, or stone. Like laminate, it resists moisture, so it’s great for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Some luxury vinyl flooring is completely waterproof. Known for its resilience and durability, vinyl can work well in high-traffic areas, especially if it has a wear layer that resists stains.

Compared to hardwood, vinyl feels softer and cushier under your feet since its layers provide more padding. Along with adding comfort, the underlayment that’s attached to vinyl flooring absorbs shocks and helps with soundproofing.

Although laminate does the best job of impersonating hardwood, plank flooring can be luxurious enough to deliver a lot of natural wood’s richness and texture. Easy-care vinyl sheeting is ideal for large areas, while peel-and-stick vinyl tiles work best for small spaces.

Tile: Attractive and highly durable, tile flooring is a decorator’s dream, with enough materials, styles, designs, and colors to work well in any room. Since it’s the most moisture-resistant type of flooring, it’s a natural choice for a bathroom or kitchen.

Materials used in tile for flooring include ceramic, porcelain, stone, marble, slate, terracotta, cement, and more. Ceramic, porcelain, and stone all work well in high-traffic areas like kitchens, while textured or matte tiles offer slip resistance that’s perfect for bathroom floors. Low-maintenance slate or porcelain tile is just right for a hardworking floor like one in a mudroom.

Tile is cool to the touch — an advantage in the summer, but not so much in the bitter cold New England winter. Fortunately, you can enjoy both the tile floor you love and the warmth you need by having the tile installed over a radiant heat layer.

Whatever type of flooring you choose, don’t worry about moving your furniture out of the way to prepare for the installation because we’ll do that for you. And we’ll keep the lines of communication open throughout the project, consulting you about every phase from selecting the materials to completing the work to your satisfaction. If you’d like some help to stay toasty warm on those frigid Massachusetts winter mornings, we can make in-floor heating part of the plan.

You’ll always have peace of mind when you hire AMS Renovations. We offer a five-year guarantee on our work, and the materials we use typically come with a manufacturer’s warranty of 10 years or more.
